Legacy is what you leave behind that is lasting. For some, the legacy of spirituality is something that is lacking in our society. Our children are desiring a real and lasting faith that they can apply into their terms and lifestyle. I know that may sound outlandish, but it is true. Our lifestyle will not be the same as our children’s lifestyle. They crave relevance and acceptance not rules and religion.
Josh McDowell, a world renown youth communicator, states “Rules without Relationship lead to Rebellion.” Relating to your children must be a priority if you want them to believe in the Rules. It has been well noted that 80% or more of youth that leave the church upon High School graduation. Make sure you relate to your child before you install a bunch of thou shall nots.
Tragically, Joshua Heschel notes that for many of us, “faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion.”
